The News-RegisterLast fall, North Lake College student, Eliezer Escalona, got together with his friends Paulina Fonseca, Natasha Farrah and Juan Camilo Chaparro to start a new club on campus called “Latin Dance Society.”It is a club for students to learn at a slow pace the basic steps of Latin dances, such as Bachata, Merengue and Salsa, while escaping from the daily stress of school.
“I was part of a group that was called Latin Dance Society at University of Texas at San Antonio and I had a good time over there. It took a load off of stress,” said Escalona, the club president.“It’s something I brought over here and I feel like it can benefit other people learning a different culture, different dances.”The club members aren’t going to limit themselves to just learning Latin styles, though. There will also be opportunities to learn other types of dances, like Hip-hop and Swing.“I never got to dance when I was a kid so I would get to dance in Latin Dance Society,” said Miles Roan, explaining why he joined the club. Roan’s favorite style of dance he has learned is Salsa.Besides the International Club, there aren’t any other clubs on campus that explore and unite Latin culture while still bringing in students with different ethnic backgrounds.“We’re not just focusing on Latin American culture, we also want to learn other cultures,” said Fonseca, a club officer.
Anyone wishing to become a member of Latin Dance Society can join at any time. LDS meets every Friday from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the North Lake College dance studio, room P-250.For more information, send an email to
