Faculty Fellows Program Description

Program Description

Individuals hired into the role of Chancellor’s Faculty Fellow will be responsible for satisfying the normal responsibilities of a full-time faculty member with the following special considerations:

Fellows Boot Camp

Upon initial hire, and for a two week period prior to the official reporting date for faculty in advance of the fall semester, Fellows will participate in a “boot camp” designed to prepare them to successfully organize and manage their initial classes. Generally, participants can expect to be engaged in on-site activities from 8 to 5 on Monday through Friday for 10 days, with pay equivalent to an extra service contract for a 3 hour credit course. This requirement will allow Fellows to receive full access to DCCCD technology supportive of faculty and to receive an initial payroll check in August.

80/20 Work Load

Teaching responsibilities for the first year of employment will be capped at 80 percent load, with 20 percent load designated to be used in training, development, and mentoring activities as defined by the location and Talent Central. Second year of assignment can be increased up to 100 percent load at the discretion of the college administration, but mentoring relationship/requirements continue for the first two years of employment.

A Mentoring Program

A mentor will be chosen for the Faculty Fellow from trained and seasoned faculty, and is intended to be a two-year commitment between the assigned mentor and the mentee. A written plan of intended actions will be required at the beginning of each long semester, as well as an end-of-semester assessment of progress and next steps.

No Extra Service Responsibilities

No extra service teaching responsibilities can be assigned during the initial year of employment; the college administration may consider such assignments during the second year of employment based on performance, development, and availability of assignment.

Summer Positions

A Faculty Fellow may be assigned summer courses as any other full-time regular faculty member, including premium pay, beginning during the initial year of employment.

Renewals

With positive performance – confirmed in usual faculty evaluation process and considering developmental and mentoring results, a Faculty Fellow can be renewed for up to two years, moving to regular faculty status upon the recommendation of a third one-year contract.

Nonrenewals

If a decision to non-renew is made within the first two years of employment, the location CEO will discuss with the chief talent officer and chancellor prior to taking other steps. Depending on the circumstances, an individual might be reassigned to another district location, to complete the Fellows assignment, and/or continue into regular faculty status.
