Steel Band and World Music

The Steel Sound Steel Band at Richland College is a performing group that learns and performs traditional calypso, reggae, and salsa music as well as Classical, Rock, Jazz, and World Music styled arrangements.

A large focus for the group is the annual performances at the now 15 years running Richland College Carnival of Steel Festival with national and international guest artists in the world, jazz and pop music community. Students learn all aspects of steel drumming, music reading and improvisation, and stylistic interpretations for an exciting multi-cultural musical experience. The Steel Band performs at various festivals and events around the state.
Many guest clinicians, soloists, and conductors from various music fields visit and perform regularly with the Richland Steel Band. Past artists include: Shelly Irvine, Andy Narell, Lord Relator, David Rudder, Tracy Thornton, Jeff Narell, Liam Teague, Joe Lee, Tim Ishii, Jose Aponte, Mike Steinel, Jan Ryberg, Paul LeBlanc, and Efren Guzman.
