Our accomplished jazz faculty hold degrees from the nation's leading jazz programs, including the renowned University of North Texas. Whether you are an experienced jazz player or a classically-trained musician ready to transition into jazz, Richland is the place for you.

This elite group is open to experienced jazz musicians by audition only. This group performs advanced jazz ensemble literature ranging in styles from traditional to contemporary. If you have good sight-reading skills and the ability to improvise, call (972) 238-6254 to set up an audition. This course meets MULB requirements for students who wish to transfer to the UNT College of Music.
The Jazz Ensemble is a standard big band of brass, reeds, and rhythm section players. Our repertoire is drawn from a variety of genres, including swing, bebop, fusion, Latin jazz, and ballad. This group is open all instrumentalists with prior playing experience and the ability to read music. Prior big band experience is recommended, but not necessary. This course meets MULB requirements for students who wish to transfer to the UNT College of Music.
A favorite of audiences, the Evening Jazz Ensemble specializes in the performance of big band music of the 1930's through 1960's. This is a reading-intensive group and prior big band experience is recommended. Instructor approval required prior to enrollment. This course meets MULB requirements for students who wish to transfer to the UNT College of Music.
Study the art of small group jazz from Richland's renowned jazz faculty. The combo rehearses unsupervised and meets once per week with the instructor in a masterclass setting. Open to all experienced jazz instrumentalists and vocalists. This course does not meet MULB requirements for students who wish to transfer to the UNT College of Music.
Open to all singers, by audition only, wishing to explore the world of vocal jazz styling in a choral setting. Openings for all voicings, bass guitar, drums, and sound tech. This course meets MULB requirements for students who wish to transfer to the UNT College of Music.
Auditions: Open auditions for this group for the Fall 2010 semester will be held Monday August 22th from 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. and Tuesday August 23th from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the Choir room (F176). Study the art of jazz improvisation. This entry-level course is designed to introduce improv techniques including blues, ii-V progressions, chord-tone and modal improvisation. The course is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists. Pre-requisite: MUSI 1300 Foundations of Music I or permission of instructor.
