Academic Council Mission Statement

The Richland College Academic Council (Academic Enrichment, Adjunct Faculty Office, Authorized Computer Technology, Business & Professions, Human & Academic Development, Educational Computing, Engineering Technology and Emerging Programs, Humanities, Instructional Program Management, Library, Math, Science, Behavioral Science, Physical Education, World Languages, Cultures, and Communications) provides instructional leadership to the Richland community by creating policies and managing activities that support the success of students, faculty, and staff.

Authorized Computer Technology

Computer Networking

The Richland College Info rmation Technology Professional Development Program facilitates student learning by offering hands-on, instructor-guided classes, and lab experiences using industry-recognized curricula that enable students to attain information-technology-professional status.

Multimedia

The Multimedia Learning Center helps students gain the necessary skills for employment in multimedia and web related industries."

Business and Professions

Office Technology

The Office Computer Technology and Support Program prepares students to be successful in today's competitive business environment by using the latest technology. In addition, students develop analytical, communication, and critical-thinking skills for a fast-paced career in a complex, diverse work environment.

Horticulture

Richland Horticulture Program provides students with the fundamentals necessary to become successful and confident in the horticulture industry through the intellectual skills, job skills, and personal growth developed by hands-on classroom experience.

Educational Personnel

The Educator Preparation Program ( Teacher Preparation Center , Educational Personnel Program, and Alternative Teacher Certification Program) prepares students to work successfully with pre K-12 students in public and private schools.

Computer Science/Computer Info rmation Systems

The Richland College Computer Science and Programming Program offers transfer and technical courses in computer literacy, computer applications, and programming that enable students to use computers in employment and daily living, to understand complex technological issues, and to adapt readily to new computer-based systems in a rapidly changing world.

Economics

The Richland College Economics Program enables students to develop a knowledge of resource allocation and understand how economics affects social, domestic, and international issues and, in turn, a nation's quality of life.

Accounting

The Richland College Accounting Program enables students to develop the foundation skills and competencies most relevant to beginning a career in accounting and business.

General Business
The Richland College General Business Program (Business, Personal Finance, and Business Law courses) enables students to develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation for how business contributes to their success as well as the success of our capitalistic economic system.
Management Careers
The Richland College Management Careers Program teaches students the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to insure their success as they function proficiently as managers or supervisors in any profit or non-profit organization.

International Business and Trade Program

The Richland College International Business and Trade Program provides students with the skills necessary for exporting and importing goods and services in local, state, national, and global economies with special respect to cross-cultural communications and awareness.

Real Estate

The Richland College Real Estate Program provides students with the knowledge and confidence they need to initiate and sustain a successful career in real estate.

Engineering Technology And Emerging Programs

Engineering Technology

The Richland College Engineering Technology Program facilitates and develops versatile, analytical, problem-solving individuals who implement global, lifelong approaches to learning and exhibit the professional skills necessary for workplace growth, leadership, and self-esteem.

Electronic Commerce Program

The Richland College Electronic Commerce Program introduces students to the business processes enabled by Internet technologies. We provide an interdisciplinary curriculum that includes marketing, management, communications, and website design and development.

Human and Academic Development Division

Human Development

The Richland College Human Development Program enables students to learn and practice skills in interpersonal relations, critical thinking, and self awareness in the areas of career and educational planning, cognitive processes for student success in the classroom, and personal and social adjustment.

Journalism

The Richland College Journalism/Student Media Program helps students develop and augment skills they learn in mass communications courses so they can successfully transfer to a four-year institution or enter the workforce.

Developmental Math

The Richland College Developmental Mathematics Program is a nationally recognized program that offers students basic mathematical literacy skills to live more functionally and participate successfully in college-level mathematics curricula.

Developmental Reading

The Richland College Developmental Reading Program helps students acquire and refine the comprehension, vocabulary, and study skills necessary for their success in college and in life.

Developmental Writing

The Richland College Developmental Writing Program teaches entry-level students to write effective sentences, paragraphs, and essays in standard American English. In addition, the program develops critical thinking skills, fosters creativity, and provides a framework for the writing process all students can use to communicate effectively in written words at the college-level.

Travel, Exposition, and Meeting Management

The Richland College Travel, Exposition, and Meeting Management Program develops professionals for the industries we serve.

Center for Tutoring and Learning Connections

The Richland College Center for Tutoring and Learning Connections works with faculty, staff, and students to provide tutoring, informative workshops, and other services that enable students to be successful in their classes and achieve their educational goals.

Humanities Division

Philosophy/Religion

The Richland College Philosophy/Religion Program provides students and teachers alike interactive and cooperative learning environments in which they may examine ideas related to their cultural, philosophical, and religious heritages. The Department further strives to develop skills in analysis and evaluation of arguments and the ability to write and to speak clearly about philosophic and religious issues which pertain to values, knowledge, reality, human nature, and God. The Department aims at translating these skills into considered actions in the lives of those involved and into reasoned interactions with the greater global community.

Art

The Richland College Visual Arts Program enables students to develop their artistic talents and understand the cultural relevance of art. In addition, the program prepares students to transfer to four-year institutions or enter the fascinating art world.

Humanities

The Richland College Humanities Program provides students with knowledge and foundations of the fine and performing arts so they can evaluate different modes of human creativity and, in turn, develop a lasting interest in the arts.

Music

The Richland College Music Program provides comprehensive academic, laboratory (including ensemble), and applied instruction in music designed to

  • prepare transfer-track music majors for advanced musical study
  • enrich general education students to be educated creators and/or
    consumers of music
  • provide creative outlets to serve the community's lifelong learning needs
  • build base-level credentials for working musicians

Drama/Dance

The Richland College Theatre Program provides a well-balanced curriculum of classroom instruction and concurrent professional employment that challenges students and fosters their success in the world of drama and theatrical productions.

Government

The Richland College Government Program helps students understand the nature of citizenship in a democratic society and develop a critical understanding of the American political system, process, and public policies.

History

The Richland College History Program helps students understand the past and its influence on the present and develop an open-minded appreciation of historical viewpoints.

Photography

The Richland College Photography Program offers students a broad range of photographic and digital imaging experiences in order to prepare them for a career in professional photographic /imaging either in the fine art or commercial field. The Department emphasizes technical proficiency and creative expression to produce a whole and meaningful experience for students.

Speech

The Richland College Speech Communication Program enables students to develop their oral communication skills and understand how those skills help them achieve their communication objectives.

Math/Science/Behavioral Sciences Division

Math

The Richland College Mathematics Program provides students with mathematics courses they can transfer to other programs and institutions and use for support and personal growth.

Science

The Richland College Science Program enables students to acquire knowledge and develop skills in science with an understanding and appreciation of its importance.

Behavioral Science

The Richland College Behavioral Sciences Program (anthropology, psychology, and sociology) provides students with skills and strategies to understand individual and group behavior, to learn how to relate well to others, and to understand the relationships between social environment and the social problems that exist in today's society.

Physical Education

The Richland Physical Education Program provides students with a sound foundation of wellness and fitness concepts they can use in their daily lives and a variety of motor skills that enable them to participate in and enjoy recreational activities for a lifetime.

World Languages, Cultures, and Communications

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

The ESOL Listening and Speaking Program develops the oral, listening, and pronunciation skills of non-native speakers of English so they can communicate effectively in academic, social, and career environments.

The Richland College ESOL Pre-Academic Reading Program nurtures students' language acquisition and development skills and develops their critical thinking and study skills necessary for their success in college-level courses.

The ESOL Writing and Grammar Program is a dual-emphasis program that focuses upon students' acquisition of

  • English language structures within the context of writing
  • paragraphs and essays
  • various modes/purposes of academic writing
  • methods for the appropriate citing of sources

English

The Richland College English Program teaches students to read, write, and think more clearly and imaginatively, and as they practice these skills, they learn to communicate effectively with the global community.

Foreign Language

The Richland College Foreign Language Program enables students to develop both their foreign language communication skills and an appreciation for the culture of the foreign language they study.

American English and Culture Institute

The Richland College American English and Culture Institute provides international (non-immigrant) ESOL students with American academic English and culture skills that contribute to their educational success and promote responsible global citizenship in a rapidly changing world community.

Multicultural Center

The Richland College Multicultural Center promotes the academic success of students whose native language is other than English or who were born outside the United States . To this end, we inform and guide them about their academic progress and education-related immigration issues, learn from them as we serve them, and help create a college environment that values their presence and promotes their success.

ESOL Learning Communities

The Richland College Intensive Learning Community Program teaches ESOL students academic English reading, writing, grammar, and communication skills in a thematic and integrated learning environment. Students learn the importance and value of cooperation and collaboration in educational and occupational settings.

Academic Enrichment

The Richland College Academic Enrichment Program provides courses that employ active learning, critical thinking, and collaborative techniques so students can learn more easily and, in turn, develop important academic skills.

Adjunct Faculty Office

The Richland College Adjunct Faculty Office provides adjunct and continuing education faculty with information and office and secretarial support needed to optimize their classroom instruction as they strive to help students succeed in learning.

Library Services

The Richland College Library connects learners with knowledge in order to enhance their intellectual, professional, cultural, and personal growth. To this end, the Library offers services that include:

Educational Computing

The Richland College Educational Computing Department provides the highest quality computer, networking, and user account access for faculty and students on the Richland College campus.

Administrative Technology

The Info rmation Technology Support Center provides computer and networking support for all levels of administrative staff, faculty, and students on the Richland College campus, while creating an enjoyable and productive working environment for all users.

Media Technology

The Richland College Media Technology Department provides audio, video and computer-based equipment for classroom and campus needs. We maintain, circulate, and expand media collections for student and instructor use. We provide instructional support for students in the Media Center , for faculty in classrooms, and for campus events.

The Richland College Program Development Division provides internal and external environmental scanning and skills analysis to primary stakeholders for the purpose of enhancing, revitalizing, and developing new programs.
