Richland College Senegal Trip

Program

Background

The U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Study Abroad Program has provided $66,000 for the Eastfield College Senegal Seminar (Grant number 21A050063). Federal funding will finance 63% of total program costs.

This Seminar is the culmination of a 10-year collaboration between the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) and the country of Senegal. The origins date back to l996, when Dr. Sherry Dean, Professor of Speech Communication and French, obtained a Chancellor’s Innovation grant to explore the possibilities of creating a study program in Senegal for DCCCD foreign-language students. In June l998, Dr. Dean and anthropology colleague Dr. Joci Ryan led a group of 19 students on a month-long Senegal “Study and Serve” program. In 2000, Dr. Dean and Dr. Lincoln Rolling, Cedar Valley College Professor of history and government, directed a second month-long Senegal study program composed of 17 students. In June 2004, Drs. Dean and Rolling led a Senegal professional development seminar for 12 DCCCD faculty, staff and students.

Since l996, a number of Senegalese professors have visited the DCCCD, including Dr. Abdoulaye Barry and Dr. Omar Sougou of the Université Gaston Berger and Mr. Karim Gueye of the Lycée Ameth Fall. The Fulbright-Hays Group Study Abroad Program allows the DCCCD and its Senegalese educational partners to cultivate the robust global community of intellectual exchange; cultural awareness and appreciation, empathy and respect.
