Senegal is one of 18 countries comprising francophone (French-speaking) West Africa. It is known for its stable democracy and economy, religious tolerance and gracious hospitality known as Teranga. Senegal is the western-most country of the African continent. Its neighbors are Mauritania (north), Guinea-Bissau (south) and Mali (east), while the Gambia nearly intersects the country. Senegal is referred to as a sub-Saharan country as it is located south of the Sahara Desert.
