Educational Requirements for Applying for Broker Licensure

Each application for broker licensure must furnish satisfactory evidence of not less than two years active (sponsored) licensure in Texas as a real estate practitioner during the 36-month period immediately preceding the filing of the broker application.

  • (A) If licensed as a salesman under requirements in effect prior to April 23, 1981, or if a currently licensed out of state broker: January 1, 1985+ 900 class (60 semester) hours, including 270 class (18 semester) hours in real estate.
  • (B) If licensed as a salesman under requirements in effect on or after April 23.1981: January 1, 1985+ 900 class (60 semester hours, including 270 class (18 semester) hours in core real estate.

Note: Out-of-state brokers applying for Texas broker licensure must have 2 years active licensure as salesman or broker during the 36-month period immediately preceding the filing of the application; must hold a current broker license at time of filing application; must include verification from appropriate Real Estate Commission(s) of licensure history; and, must satisfy the education requirements as cited in (A) above.

Note: In compliance with Section 7A(a) of the Real Estate License Act, Mandatory Continuing Education (MCE) hours will be required to renew an active license as follows:

Mandatory Continuing Education is required for all active brokers not exempted in October 1991, and active salesmenwho are not subject to Salesman Annual Education (SAE) requirements. The requirements to renew a two-year license on active status is 15 classroom hours, 6 hours of which must be in legal topics. Licensees must complete the course(s) within two years immediately preceding the license renewal date. Please contact the Texas Real Estate Commission if you are uncertain about when you should take your MCE courses.

All MCE courses offered at Richland College meet on Saturday and Sunday.
