Orchestra, directed by Mr. Bruce Wittrig, is open to all members of the Richland community experienced in string performance. This includes music majors as well as non-music majors and qualified emeritus students who enjoy playing. The literature performed is diverse and reflects the abilities of the current ensemble members. For the most experienced students, opportunities for leadership roles exist, including the possibility of performing a solo with the ensemble. The ensemble rehearses under the guidance of the director and performs as a chamber ensemble without conductor.
The group performs twice each semester. Rehearsals are scheduled from 3:30pm - 4:50pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Percussion Lab (F289). The class will be split up into sectional rehearsals as needed. A limited number of cello and bass instruments are available for student use. Violin and viola players must provide their own instruments.
It is also possible for students enrolled in this class to enroll in private lessons. These are weekly lessons, one half hour in length, for one additional credit hour per semester. The cost of these lessons is $39 per semester for Dallas County residents. Students interested in taking private lessons should contact Michael Crawford at 972-238-6284.
This course meets MULB requirements for students wishing to transfer to the UNT College of Music.
A placement audition will be required of all new members during the first week of classes. Please prepare two major 2-octave scales and a short etude that is representative of your ability level. Students not meeting a minimum level of proficiency on the instrument (inclusive of note/rhythm reading) may not be allowed to participate. This decision is at the discretion of the instructor.
