10 Killer Free Online Applications For Going Back To College!
- Google Docs and Spreadsheets -
Rather than spend $200 on the student edition of Microsoft Office, Google Docs & Spreadsheets is free and can usually do everything you will need for school. The other benefit is that instead of having a Word doc on your computer that you need to remember to email yourself or carry around on a flash drive, Google docs are stored online. This means as long as you have an internet connection, you have your files!
- Notesake -
"With NoteSake, you can take your notes during class, share them with a friend, or groups can work together on the same note, all through your laptop."
- Facebook -
Facebook is the new MySpace. It offers more protection from just anyone viewing your profile and now has third party apps. That means that if you want it to do something it currently can't, you can just search for an app and you're done.
- del.icio.us -
Del.icio.us allows you to bookmark websites to an online account. This comes in handy when you use multiple computers or maybe you have to use one of the libraries' computers.
- GMail and Google Calendar -
Rather than getting a school email address that you have to ditch once you graduate, just get a GMail account and keep it forever. Google Calendar works well with mail and you have the ability to share your calendar with friends and family. It also offers tons of storage which means you never have to delete emails.
- Mozilla Firefox -
This may or may not be considered a "web app", but it's ability to use add-ons make it essential if you want to use some of the other applications on this list.
- Meebo -
Meebo gives you the ability to chat with anyone no matter what instant message client they use (eg. aim, yahoo, msn or google talk). It also allows you to create an account that will remember your information for all your accounts. This way, you can login to Google Talk, MSN your Yahoo IM accounts, all with your one Meebo account.
- You Send It -
This site allows you to send files upto 100MB. You never know when you need to send a large file to one of your classmates. Maybe it's your class project or maybe it's an album to some Indie band you heard last night.
- Google Maps -
Being in a new town means it's easy to get lost. With Google Maps you can search by address or just type the business name or type of business. This isn't going to guarantee you will never get lost, but it's a good start:)
- Box.net -
The free package on Box allows you 1GB of free storage. This obviously isn't a lot, but it's a good way to backup those thesis papers so you always have an off-site backup in case your computer gets stolen or broken.
