Institutional Review Board Process

Research Study Approval

Researchers wishing to conduct a study at Richland College must first contact the Dean of the Office of Planning and Research for Institutional Effectiveness (OPRIE) and submit a research study proposal outlining the purpose, research questions, and methods of data collection and analysis. The Dean of OPRIE, in conjunction with departments to be involved in the study, will evaluate whether Richland can commit the resources necessary for the study and will make a recommendation to the president. The president makes the final determination concerning approval to conduct the study. Preliminary approval to conduct the study will be contingent upon approval of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for the protection of human subjects.

IRB Approval

Once preliminary approval to conduct the study has been obtained, the researcher will forward the study proposal to the chair of the IRB. The IRB chair will determine which review process the study must undergo: full review, expedited review, or exempt from review. Following that determination, the IRB chair will send forms appropriate to the identified review process to the researcher to complete. After those documents are received, reviewed, and approved, the research study may proceed.
