Retirement Planning - A Do It Yourself Project
(Students must bring to class a fully charged laptop, be wireless ready and able to access the web.)
You will use free software and your laptop to apply what you have learned to your personal situation. Broad topics: Establishing your life expectancy, setting measurable goals, money compounding, budgeting, emergency fund, debt, inflation rates, and navigating Money Tree software (putting in your data and assumptions). Insurance topics: Medical, disability, life, long term care, and property—what you need and don’t. Investment topics: Risk assessment, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, index funds, stocks, annuities, bonds, CDs, 401(k), IRA, Roth, 529 plans, Coverdell and ValueLine/Morningstar. Government topics: Income taxes, social security benefits, estate taxes, and property transfers. Concluding topics: Using Monte Carlo simulation in Money Tree to analyze “what-if,” portfolio survival, safe withdrawal rates, and making changes to stay on the right track.
