Philosophy
My career counseling philosophy is values driven and often involves social awareness and personal responsibility. I believe that there are consequences to our actions (and inactions), and that we fully express our "humanness" when we accept responsibility for our behavior, and learn to change in order to become the person we want (and frankly, ought) to be. The idea of change is the critical theme that often times manifests itself in my advising sessions. I invite students to "look at the larger picture," if you will. This process requires significant introspection and self-examination. I use a variety of methods with students to help them achieve a better self-awareness, including journalling, and various assessment instruments (primarily MBTI, Strong Campbell, SDS, and I/E Locus of Control). We also look for patterns and consistent emerging themes, and after identifying these themes, talk about options for research and career exploration. Ideally, students are empowered (and even compelled) to follow their hearts and minds based on tangible and intangible evidence.
