Committees

Executive Council

Chaired by Artist Thornton
This committee is a combination of the executive officers, committee chairs and veteran staff/faculty. Committee should serve as the foundation of the AAC.

Fundraising Committee

Responsible for identifying, planning and implementing fundraising opportunities and sources of income to support the AAC’s scholarship fund other AAC programs

Marketing Committee

Chaired by Kimberly Lester-Booker
Responsible for educating and informing the Richland College community about AAC’s mission, goals and purpose. The committee is also responsible for disseminating information about new and innovative AAC community collaborative projects and events to Richland College, the surrounding community and other DCCCD campuses.

Mentor Program

Chaired by Myron Laster
Purpose is to guide students in a manner that will allow them to achieve success in all educational and career endeavors. Mentoring is also available for Richland’s African American employees.

New Membership

Purpose is to assist new employees with adjusting to the Richland College community in order for them to achieve excellence and success here at Richland and beyond. Committee is also responsible for informing Richland’s employees about membership into AAC.

Political Action Committee

Chaired by Wilfred Manyango
In the absence of a parliamentarian, this committee provides assistance in ensuring that the AAC meetings flow smoothly and orderly. The objective of the committee is to promote an awareness of political issues among members of the AAC ; This will be accomplished by:

  1. Encouraging members to be involved in the political process
  2. Conducting voter registration drives among members
  3. Updating members on political issues of interest to Americans in general and African Americans in particular
  4. Assisting in the formulation of the constitution and by-laws of the AAC

Program Committee

Chaired by Tanisha Shorter
Objective of Program Chair:
To ensure the goals and objectives of the organization are aligned with the vision and mission of Richland Community College

  1. To develop, organize and maintain subcommittees to ensure the goals and objectives are fulfilled
  2. To approve events and programs for the organization
  3. To designate leadership within subcommittees

Purpose: To ensure activities and events are specifically designed for the enrichment of Richland’s students, faculty and staff
Strategic Planning: To establish and employ services in order to address the needs of our African American students as well as the staff and faculty

Scholarship Committee

Chaired by James Sprigner
Created to provide financial assistance to deserving young women and men to further their post secondary education at Richland College. The recipient(s) must be graduating high school seniors planning to attend Richland or Richland students in good standing.

The committee responsibilities include developing the scholarship application package, dissemination procedures and scholarship requirements. In addition, committee members are responsible for disseminating scholarship application packets, serve as members of the selection committee and selecting scholarship recipients.

Social Events Committee

Chaired by Alisa Jones
The Social Events Committee is responsible for initiating and planning a creative and diverse mixture of social and cultural programs for the members of the African American Connection.
It is the goal of the committee to coordinate events that will provide members with the opportunity to socialize and get to know other members in an informal, relaxed and fun atmosphere.
