ENGL 1302 Composition II (3)
Special Emphasis: Topics in African American Studies

This is a course in critical reading and writing with an emphasis in African American studies. To provide students greater awareness of the black experience within the majority culture, course topics may vary each semester. Topics may include a general survey of African American culture, or a more specialized approach such as the rhetoric of black cinema, the 'sixties' and civil rights, the rhetoric of black militancy and social reform, and hip hop as message and music. Second semester composition objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

ENGL 2328 American Literature (3)
Special Emphasis: Stories in Black and White

This course includes significant works of American writers from the 19the century to the present. Emphasis will be placed on African American authors as a means to study the socio cultural relationship between African and Anglo Americans through literature and film. Sophomore literature objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

ENGL 2326 American Literature (3)
Special Emphasis: Topics in African American Literature

This course is organized by movements, periods, and themes that are subject to change each semester. Topics may include a general survey of African American literature, or a more specialized approach such as literature of the reconstruction, black female authors, poetry, mulatto literatures, the Black Arts Movement, and the Harlem Renaissance. Sophomore literature objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

HIST 1301 History of the United States (3)
Special Emphasis: The Voyage from African to African American

This course will present the history of the United States by emphasizing the beginnings of African slavery to the development of the 'peculiar institution' in America by examining the intellectual debates surrounding labor needs and race. In a contextual setting, students will learn about the formation of a unique African American culture. Freshman history objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

HIST 2381 African American History (3)

This course addresses the continued struggle for political, educational, and economic equality by African Americans. Emphasis is placed on the contributions of African Americans in the development of an industrialized United States as well as their place in the historical record. Sophomore history objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

SPCH 1315 Fundamentals in Public Speaking (3)
Special Emphasis: Public Speaking from the African American Perspective

This course will develop skills and understanding of the public speaking process through the rhetorical analysis of Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Barbara Jordan, Fannie Lou Hamer, Tupac Shakur and Muhammad Ali. Students will sharpen their skills in audience analysis, collection of materials, principles of reasoning, outlining, delivering effective speeches. Speech communication objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

PSYC 2301 Introduction to Psychology (3)
Special Emphasis: Psychological Perspectives in Black and White

The cultural context in which we live influences the way we think, feel, and behave. This class will explore the basic theories and facts in introductory psychology, but will also examine these principles socio-culturally by addressing issues in the lives of African Americans. Psychology course objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

SOCI 1306 Contemporary Social Issues (3)
Special Emphasis: African Americans and Society

This course is a sociological study of social issues within the African American community. Topics discussed will include social inequality, education, poverty, crime, and family structure. Sociology course objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

SOCI 2319 Race, Ethnicity & Community (3)

This course will study the effects of political, historical, social, cultural, and media influences on behavior and perception. Special emphasis will be placed on issues of race, ethnicity, community building, and peace. Native Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans, Asian Americans. Sociology course objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

HUMA 1315 Introduction to the Humanities (3)
Special Emphasis: The Art of Rhythm and Blues

This is a survey course in the visual and performing arts. Special emphasis will be placed on African American art, film, and musical artists in such genres as blues, jazz, and rap/hiphop. Humanities course objectives, guidelines, and core curriculum competencies will be met.

CUST 2370 Cultural Studies (3)
Special Emphasis: Topics in Black America

This is an interdisciplinary course that promotes critical reasoning through an examination of African America culture in its many forms. Topics may vary each semester
